impression of a book of great expectation went to the bookstore during theholiday, i chose a book from a lot of world masterpieces, named great expectation, when i pick up this book, i have not expected that such an english book will have a so great impact on me, making my thoughts and feelings very deep, i think that theform and content of this book are all very outstanding. it is written by charles dickens,a famous writter from england,and it is not important.now i will turn to thetopic on how it can attract me.
the character in this masterpiece left me the deep impression is pip.he falls in lovewith estella.he studied as hard as he could.educating himself for her.why did helove estella so much? just for her beautiful face? because she is pretty? she is rich? she is proud? in fact, i think pip pay out so much for the love.she didnt treat him well and even that she didnt respect him at all! she put the food for him as a dog,but he didnt hate her.
on the contrary, he left from his home and his friends. he just want to be a gentleman.he abandoned a lot than he got. i cant understand why he do it in this way. i think its not worth at all. if one person dont like you or not respect you,you neednt do everything for her. so it made me quite sad.i feel sorry for pip. he had a very difficult life... miss havisham is aslo a character who left me a deep impression.she was a pitiful lady.her mother died young.
her farther was very rich and very proud.with only one child,miss havisham,by his first wife.in fact, she should have a nice life,but her wedding was destroied by her fiance.he broke her heart and she was angry.she want to retaliate all men.she was really a abject woman.but she chose a wrong way to continue her life..she wanted to hurt other persons.and she had done.this is no good for her.only made her feel a little comfortable.and there was more victims in the world.there are so many persons in the world.when they were hurt they want to hurt other innocent persons.

what is gothic setting ？
gothic setting is one of the fiction genres which first begin at the middle of 19 century in england 。 sa一vage ， mystery ， terror ， backward ， dark ， family curse ， supernatural and suspense are the signal features of this kind of fiction genre 。 it mainly talks something about the dark side of society such as family hatred and succession race 。 the story in this style usually happens in remote place that far away from city 。
what do we know about gothic setting in wuthering heights ？
in fact ， what impresses me most in this novel is the description of the environment 。 it is full of gothic setting 。 we can find that there is no sunshine in wuthering heights all the year around ， the haze and atmosphere there make people feel mystery and depressive 。 the weather is always changing according to the plot 。 when there is something badly happen ， the environment will be influenced 。 for example, rain comes at once after catherine’s betray 。 when it comes to catherine’s death ， it changes quickly and suddenly to hea一vy rain and strong wind 。 all in all ， i think all this gothic setting is to show the feeling of writer 。

i knew mark twain when i was a middle school student. in my memory, there is an article in my english textbook that written by him. at that time, i pay no attention to mark twain. however, i knew more about him after i learned the history and anthology of american literature, he appeals to me dearly and deeply. as a result, i read a part of his novels in part time. here i will introduce million pounds to you. before that, i will give some information about mark twain to you. and last, it comes my though.
samuel langhorne clemens （november 30, 1835 – april 21, 1910） was an american humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer, better known by the pen name mark twain. he was born in florida, missouri and brought up in hannibal, missouri. after his father"s death in 1847, he was apprenticed to a printer and wrote for his brother"s newspaper. he later worked as a licensed mississippi river-boat pilot. the civil war put an end to the steamboat traffic and clemens moved to virginia city, where he edited the territorial enterprise. on february 3, 1863, "mark twain" was born when clemens signed a humorous travel account with that pseudonym. he often uses exaggerated ways to show his irony.
mark twain is most noted for his novels adventures of huckleberry finn, and the adventures of tom sawyer. he is also known for his quotations. during his life, clemens became a friend to presidents, artists, leading industrialists and european royalty. for i love the one million pounds note best, i would introduce it to you.
is there real free-lunch in the world? maybe there is! and such kind of free lunch strikes the poor and honest young man henry adams who has surprisingly got a one-million bank note from the brothers （roderick & oliver）。 as a matter of fact, the brothers had made a bet, if a poor, honest and clever people who come knocking on the door received the one million pounds, what will be happening to his life? the elder brother think that he would starve to death because he could not prove that the money belongs to him, will be arousing others’ suspicion, and even the banks do not let him deposit the money. on the contrary, the younger brother believes that he would live in a very good life. so the brothers lend the one million pounds to henry adams, and spent 30 days abroad. from then on, henry adams becomes a bright focus of the money-priority society. later, the lucky young man experiences two sharply different treatments in the tailor shop. in the ball, people from every social class try every chance to show their friendship and flattery to the new millionaire. adams never has the chance to spend a penny because no one can change the million and he is soon living in a luxurious hotel suite, wearing expensive suits. no one asks him to pay bill, these are forwarded for later payment. he even gets the chance to go to the party that held by duke. fortunately, henry meets jane griffiths and fall in love with this beautiful woman. he also comes across his good friend. the man gives him some advice to earn money. 30 days has passed, henry adams asks his girlfriend company him to meet the brothers. out of his expectation, his girlfriend is the daughter of one of the brothers. and finally he got a very good job from the brother. and he lived a very happy life.
mark twain"s short story of one million pounds note is a very good work. the article satires the thoughts of money is everything, money is omnipotent, and expose the ugly face of capitalist society. as we all know, the root of the story was the bet of the brothers. what is the bet actually? where does the attraction of the bank note lie in?
as far as i am concerned, the one million pounds note takes an interesting, satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in england. england is a country where class and wealth are given extreme significance, especially among the rich. the novel shows the hypocrisy that existed among these people, how the rich are quick to change face when they find out that you"re a man of wealth and how within the next moment they revert back to their condescending selves when all wealth is lost. the story was based on the main theme by emphasizing on the hypocrisy of the upper class society but at the same time it also creates a balance that prevents the novel from being a mockery of the british society. the love story appears at the right time and there is plenty of comedy to keep one entertained. the ending is a little predictable but the director does an overall good job by rounding it up and presenting his points.

(chapter vii the sounding of the wild) when the last sentence vanished from my eyes, i can still perceive an echo of a song - a wild song, which knocks up my dizzy mind that always cheerfully sink into the so-called civilized world without questioning. wild, is no longer a symbol of the law of jungle but a headspring where streams out love, passion, bravery, loyalty, friendship, venture, competition and tolerance all these virtues can easily be found in the call of the wild.
jack london (1876-1916) is a worldwide renowned novelist. his stories successfully reflect the contradictory views of man’s nature and destiny in and against the wild, and his "fight to survive" notion has gained him and his works timeless popularity, particularly, the call of the wild
it tells a story of a gigantic dog, named buck, who is stolen from a rich and comfortable home and forced to learn to survive as an alaskan sled dog. buck, at first, is too savage for the company of man until he coincidently encounters his beloved master-kindhearted john thornton. finally, john’s incidental death breaks buck’s last tie to the man and drives him into his long-desired wild with his pack. in the story, buck and john simply adopt themselves to answer the call of the wild. when it comes to buck’s mind that one day he will eventually leave john- his master, all he wants to do is just to help him finish the gold-rush-trip. he " from then on, night and day, never put a halt, in desperation, he burst into long stretch of flight, did not to stay him (john)…" (chapter vii the sounding of the wild) buck wished to remember john’s image forever, he "for two days and nights never left camp, never let thornton out of his sight. he followed him about at his work, watched him while saw him into blankets at night and out of them in the morning…" (chapter vii) when i read these words i just could not hold my tears bursting. can a real man devote himself to loyalty and friendship in such a way? on the other hand, john thornton is not only a dog-lover but also a brave and venturous man. he is so straightforward and simple that makes him an accommodating man. once he firmly roots a goal into his heart, it seems that nothing could prevent him from accomplishing it except death. i do not know whether the persistence is the most vital element to make a man successful, but what i know is that you are not far away from success once you occupy it.
it is jack london who plunges me into the animated wild from the hustle-and-bustle and from desperate city. there, i merely cannot deny the attraction of buck’s bark, which enlightens me to pursue another lost half of the nature in mankind, and to dig out a true meaning of life. dare we imagine that london intentionally employs buck to set us a model with perfect characters (count barbarity out)? the answer is affirmed. we, as animals, are from the wild but shedding off more and more wild signs, which demonstrate us as the "uncivilized". however, who can fully guarantee that we have not overlooked some essential wild-endowed virtues? especially, nowadays, it seems more crucial for us to stop looking at the post-industrialized world and to ponder for a while. when cheats, betrayals, lies, lusts and crimes stuff a materialized society, whether london uses this novel to help himself escape the reality or warn the earthy people, to us, modern man, is all the same.() it appears horrible that in modern society many people are enthusiastically talking about how to build up "special relations" to the authority, deceiving and lying to each other.
to them life is a mask-wearing process rather than a hard work. every time, you browse webpages, scandals in politics, business, the entertainment circle and even on campus crowd into your eyes. oh, what is the essence of human beings? what is the civilization to us? do we need to look back at where we came from? is it good or bad for us to speak out what we think and to do what the consciences demand us to? are we wasting talents given by the mighty nature? be an honest, straightforward, warmhearted, emotional and responsible man or be a shrewd, cold hearted and astute hypocrite? while embracing the "civilized" rubbish, we are losing those good virtues, which are the calls of the wild. once we lose them, we are to lose ourselves, and we will get nowhere. i wish this dreadful thought is totally a fallacy, but, now, it is chilling me hard.

call of the wild is not a story for the squeamish or very young. by involving us in the characters lives, jack london tells the truth. it is a life-and-death war between the harsh land and the soul every day. there is blood, death, cruelty--but its the truth.

i believe that one of the factors that makes a piece of literature or even a movie a masterpiece is how well the reader can relate to the story. this is definitely a book everyone can relate to.
the adventures of tom sawyer is a literary masterpieces, written in 1876 by the famous author mark twain. tom sawyer is a mischievous young boy who lives in the small town on the mississippi river called st. petersburg. the story line is simple, the book reads like a biography or a memoir of a summer in tom sawyer's life.
tom sawyer seems to be the precursor of and the template for misfit kids such as dennis the menace, malcolm in the middle, and calvin and hobbs. what makes this story great is that tom sawyer represents everything that is great about childhood. the book is filled with tom's adventures playing pirates and war with his friend joe harper. tom has a trusted friend, huck finn, who few of the adults approve of. the book is filled with ideas of how the world works, such as how pirates and robbers work, that are so innocent, they could only come from a child. it is a story filled with action, adventure, ingenious ideas, love, and schoolyard politics. the whole story is seemingly a complication of what people did or wish they did during their childhood.
the book is a little difficult to read at first. personally, it takes me a little while to get used to the 19th century dialect in the book. other than referring to persons of african decent in derogatory terms (which i'm sure uses terms even young children already know)， the book would be an enjoyable read for people of all ages. i highly recommend this book for anyone looking to feel young again, if just for a few hundred pages.
