i knew mark twain when i was a middle school student. in my memory, there is an article in my english textbook that written by him. at that time, i pay no attention to mark twain. however, i knew more about him after i learned the history and anthology of american literature, he appeals to me dearly and deeply. as a result, i read a part of his novels in part time. here i will introduce million pounds to you. before that, i will give some information about mark twain to you. and last, it es my though.

samuel langhorne clemens (november 30, 1835 – april 21, 1910) was an american humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer, better known by the pen name mark twain. he was born in florida, missouri and brought up in hannibal, missouri. after his fathers death in 1847, he was apprenticed to a printer and wrote for his brothers newspaper. he later worked as a licensed mississippi river-boat pilot. the civil war put an end to the steamboat traffic and clemens moved to virginia city, where he edited the territorial enterprise. on february 3, 1863, mark twain was born when clemens signed a humorous travel account with that pseudonym. he often uses exaggerated ways to show his irony.

mark twain is most noted for his novels adventures of huckleberry finn, and the adventures of tom sawyer. he is also known for his quotations. during his life, clemens became a friend to presidents, artists, leading industrialists and european royalty. for i love the one million pounds note best, i would introduce it to you.

is there real free-lunch in the world? maybe there is! and such kind of “free lunch” strikes the poor and honest young man henry adams who has surprisingly got a one-million bank note from the brothers (roderick & oliver)。 as a matter of fact, the brothers had made a bet, if a poor, honest and clever people who e knocking on the door received the one million pounds, what will be happening to his life? the elder brother think that he would starve to death because he could not prove that the money belongs to him, will be arousing others’ suspicion, (lz13)and even the banks do not let him deposit the money. on the contrary, the younger brother believes that he would live in a very good life. so the brothers lend the one million pounds to henry adams, and spent 30 days abroad. from then on, henry adams bees a bright focus of the money-priority society. later, the lucky young man experiences two sharply different treatments in the tailor shop. in the ball, people from every social class try every

chance to show their friendship and flattery to the new millionaire. adams never has the chance to spend a penny because no one can change the million and he is soon living in a luxurious hotel suite, wearing expensive suits. no one asks him to pay bill, these are forwarded for later payment. he even gets the chance to go to the party that held by duke. fortunately, henry meets jane griffiths and fall in love with this beautiful woman. he also es across his good friend. the man gives him some advice to earn money. 30 days has passed, henry adams asks his girlfriend pany him to meet the brothers. out of his expectation, his girlfriend is the daughter of one of the brothers. and finally he got a very good job from the brother. and he lived a very happy life.

mark twains short story of "one million pounds note" is a very good work. the article satires the thoughts of "money is everything," "money is omnipotent," and expose the ugly face of capitalist society. as we all know, the root of the story was the bet of the brothers. what is the bet actually? where does the attraction of the bank note lie in?

as far as i am concerned, the one million pounds note takes an interesting, satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in england. england is a country where class and wealth are given extreme significance, especially among the rich. the novel shows the hypocrisy that existed among these people, how the rich are quick to change face when they find out that youre a man of wealth and how within the next moment they revert back to their condescending selves when all wealth is lost. the story was based on the main theme by emphasizing on the hypocrisy of the upper class society but at the same time it also creates a balance that prevents the novel from being a mockery of the british society. the love story appears at the right time and there is plenty of edy to keep one entertained. the ending is a little predictable but the director does an overall good job by rounding it up and presenting his points.

in my heart, herry was so luckily, not everyone can get the chance to use the million. i am so envious of the "lucky" of the heroine, but at the same time i would like to think that the reason why people carry favor with him is just that they attract too much important to money, isn’t it? money worship is shameful and should not be reaping more! money is not omnipotent, and in the world, there are many things that more important than money ……

pride and prejudice is the work of jane austen, a british woman writer. the scope of this work is only three or four families in a village, with elizabeth as the main character. the main plot is nothing more than the chat about marriage and property in the front of the fireplace and in the meeting of relatives and friends, the bee chase and butterfly chase in the market, church, dance, banquet and other occasions, and the love talk.

the arrogance of darcy and the prejudice of the heroine all have obvious class attribute. their frustrations in love are not due to their accidental misunderstanding, but because there is an inevitable gap between the two sides in different class status. elizabeth, as a middle-class common girl, only by virtue of the charm of her personality and her excellent quality, won the fame and fortune of the noble young master, and finally became a good couple with her. this is another copy of cinderellas story.

the same is true in life. only by putting down the arrogant attitude, throwing away the prejudiced vision, treating with empathy, and understanding each other through communication, can we know each other. like mr. darcy in the book, although the appearance gives the impression of arrogance, arrogance and superciliousness. but the heart is kind and sincere and willing to let go, its attitude of not stubborn is really appreciated.

after reading the whole book of “great expectations” written by charles dickens, i can’t find suitable words to express my thoughts completely.

first of all, i am attracted by the excellent literary talent of charles dickens. the descriptions of the details are just right for the foundation of the background. the design of the story also brings me shock. to me, it is not only a good story, but also a lesson of the life that i am experiencing.

but, what i have learnt from the book is not the main idea that charles dickens wanted to show. what impresses me deeply is only a supporting role ―joe. compared with the life of pip, what joe has experienced is so ordinary. he is an ordinary blacksmith, an ordinary husband, an ordinary brother, an ordinary friend, even an ordinary person! however, just such an ordinary person brings me a great special feeling. in his world, life is so simple. he is far away from the complex world which is polluted by the ugly soul of people. may be, “kind-hearted” is the biggest advantage of him, which is also the biggest shortage of him in his daily life.

different from all the other figures in the book, joe’s life is so simple and his thoughts also stay pure after he experiences whatever sufferings that life gives him. in my opinion, his childhood is miserable. what he has experienced must be unhappy and sorrowful. he grows up in such a family, meets so much violence(may be, in that period, it is common)to say it exaggeratedly, there must be bad influences on his young heart. but, what he does surprises me one more time. he treats his sufferings in another way―to be sincere.

i can’t really understand what he is thinking about, but i am deeply touched by his behavior. his tolerant with his wife―pip’s sister, his friendly affection with pip, even his sympathy with a prisoner that all express one thing ― sincerity. he is the harbor of soul for pip. there is such a great difference between joe and pip’s ambition. what he tells us is that to be simple is the key to your happy life.

optimism is another spirit in his soul. he never gives in to the difficulties that he meets. maybe, in his dictionary of life, there is no word with the meaning of shrinking back. he never worries about his lower grade life ,but faces up to it. for example, he only can read ”j” and ”o” before, because he has no chance to study in his childhood. but finally, he sets his mind to study and can write letters by himself.

although joe is a person with only a little knowledge, what he owns is far more precious than many learned men. his pure heart will bring him great expectations. what he teaches us is that never to be taken away your pure heart and optimistic attitude towards life. there will be nothing difficult or miserable when you treat them with a sincere heart.

to be simple, what you will gain is far beyond your imagination and you will find that life is just a game which is always filled with happiness and bliss!

in the world history of literature, some many classical famous works are going to be immortal, but jane eyre deeply enters peoples soul deeply, it by irresistible intrinsic deep has attracted the tens of thousands of readers deeply, has affected peoples inner world, is in the world history of literature the eternal classics.

jane eyres author charlotte bronte and howls the mountain village author amy li · bronte is sisters. although two people live in the identical family and the social environment, but disposition actually entirely different. charlotte bronte the natural disposition is arrogant, pursues and yearns for all fine things. she from has slightly lost the maternal love, obtains the father likes very being also few, her appearance is thin and small, also is unattractive, jane eyres contour is completely charlotte bronte the real portrayal. charlotte bronte perhaps on because own appearance is not conspicuous, created her innermost soul depth to feel inferior deeply, reflected in hers disposition was the sensitive self-respect.

jane eyre double perishes from the little parents, lives under subjugation, not only cousins insult, despising which the aunt not covers up, to has lodged the school, but also must receive teacher the unfair treatment. is precisely all these, let jane eyre practice on the self-confident spirit which stood buffer, caused mr. rochester to shock for it, regarded as her to be possible with own energetic equality conversation person, and deep has fallen in love with her deeply. his sincerity lets her be moved, she decided entrusts for his life. but in the marriage that one day, the accident knew actually in addition has madame who contracts neurosis, life in sand field’s top layer. she said righteously to that, “you thought i poor, mean, am not beautiful, am diminutive, i do not have the soul, has not had the heart? - - you thought mistakenly! - - jan · likes with you having the soul - - also completely to have a heart equally! … i not am relying on the custom, the convention now, even not relies on the human body every tire bead heel you to converse, but is my mind in with yours mind speech, as soon as probably we all leave the world, two people stand equally in front of god - - because we are originally equal!”

“great expectations” is one of dicken’s most maturest works. after dicken had experienced large part of meaningful life, he had a deeper cognition for people, environment, as well as the life which he had gone through. and all the mature cognitions are included in this writing——great expectations.

pip was brought up by his sister who was unpleasant as well as crude and her friendly blacksmith husband—joe. joe himself had arranged a common hard but satisfied path for pip to go through, and on the other hand, pip beheld this as his highest goal to achieve.

but the two things which he had experienced later had changed his pursue and his fate as well. met abel magwith(an escaped convict) in the swamp, and unwillingly helped him out of danger by stealing food from his own home. if say that had changed his attitude for material life, then, his introduction to miss havisham, an aging woman who had been jilted at the alter and estella who had been brought up by havisham only to revenge for her own pain had brought vast shock for his world of spirit.

aspiring to be a gentleman despite his humble born, pip fortunately or unfortunately received a fund of wealth from an unknown source and being sent to london with a lawyer. from then on, he became a gentleman without question at the price of losing everything.

the title of this book is ‘great expectations” which make an impression on us that the character would have great expectations just as the title goes. but in fact this title has a tone of sarcastic on the other way around.

this story full of quirkiness from the very beginning to the end, the relations among characters are anfractuous as well which actually attracted me a lot.

one of the paragraphs, which i appreciate most implicatively as well as beautifully expresses the feeling between pip and estella.

“we are friends,” said i, rising and bending over her, as she rose from the bench.

‘and will continue friends apart.” said estella.

i took his hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place; and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when i first let the forge, so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, i saw no shadow of another parting from her.

at the view of language, this works had achieved a step o f highest, dicken had made this writing plain and fluent as well, which surely can attract lots of readers and high comments.

to be frank, i really impressed by this art of beauty. so i like dicken’s works very much.
