书中讲述了居住在野森林里和小河附近的一群好朋友鼹鼠、河鼠、蟾蜍和獾的故事。。狂妄自大的蟾蜍不务正业，任意挥霍家产，追求新奇玩意儿，结果上当受骗，被关进大牢中，连家也没保住。最终在朋友们的帮忙下才把家夺了回来，他们也所以而成为了森林里的名人。

书中其中给我印象最深的是蟾蜍出逃闯祸后的部分。那一次，蟾蜍迷迷糊糊把别人的车开到了路上，结果，被警察拦住了，还被送到警局理解盘问。警察告诉蟾蜍他犯了很多罪，第一，他偷了一辆昂贵的汽车;第二，他违章驾驶，危害公众;第三，他对警察蛮横无礼。录事先生把蟾蜍做过的所有的坏事都记录下来了。首席法官说道：“唯一的困难是，怎样才能给这个不知悔改的家伙一点厉害尝尝?”法官们商量了一下，说：“你一共要坐十九年的牢。”录事先生立刻说：“凑个整数，就二十年吧。”哎呀，真是倒霉的蟾蜍!蟾蜍被戴上了镣铐，推进了监狱……
